Catholic Diocese Of Sioux Falls – The Bishop's Bulletin, December, 1970

The Rev. Henry Hoerner, Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Aberdeen, died after a long illness on Sunday, December 13, He was 75 years old and had been a priest of the Sioux Falls diocese for more than 50 years.

A native of Hoven, Monsignor Hoerner was ordained for the Sioux Falls church on June 17, 1920 by Bishop Thomas O' Gorman. After a year of graduate study at Catholic University, Washington, D. C., the newly ordained returned to Sioux Falls as a professor of History at Columbus College, a post he held until 1929. When Columbus College was closed that year, he was assigned to the staff of Christ College, Amarilo, Texas, for one year.

In 1930, he was named Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Marion, and in 1934 he was transferred to the pastorate of Sacred Heart Parish, Parkston. He was named Pastor of the St. Mary, Aberdeen parish in 1938.

On May 6, 1960, he was honored by the Holy See by being named a Domestic Prelate and given the title of Monsignor.

In failing health for several years, Monsignor Hoerner spent the last years of his life in residence at Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen. His funeral was conducted in St. Mary's Church, Aberdeen, on Wednesday afternoon.
