Leader Dies
ABILENE - George S. Anderson, Abilene business leader and philanthropist, died last night at the age of 93. He died in a wing of Hendrick Memorial Hospital which he gave the institution as a memorial to his late wife. Anderson was chairman of the Board of the Reported Publishing Co. which publishes the Abilene Reporter-News, chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank, and chairman of the board of trustees of Henrick Memorial Hospital. He was president of the Abilene Stationery Co. and a senior trustee and executive committeeman of Hardin-Simmons University. Anderson, a native of Bell County, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Luther McCrea of Nashville, Tenn.

George S. Anderson's father was Capt. Vachel Hobbs Anderson (1831-1922), son of Capt. Azor (c1794-post1870) and Mary Pope Hobbs Anderson (1800-35), who was born in Nelson County, Ky. He was postmaster of Roby, Tx. and he suggested his middle name for Hobbs, Tx. He served in the Civil War (CSA). He married c1861, Martha Malvina Skiles (1842-1924), of Missouri. Their six children were Azor R. (1861-1930); William M. (c1866-); Samuel H. (1866-1922); George S. (1871-1964); Victor Hobbs (1874-1945); and Mary Melvina Anderson (1877-1945) who was postmistress of Roby, Tx. and married attorney William Briant Ferrel (1873-1933). A grandson was Luther McCrea (1900-).

Azor R. Anderson (1861-1930) was an attorney in Post, Tx. He married Willie B. Carpenter (1873-1931). Two children were Vachel H. (1900-83) who married Marvelle M. (1904-83); and Mamie Anderson (c1908-).

William M. Anderson (c1866-) lived in Topeka, Kan. He married Maggie Kerby (c1871-). Three children were Chester (c1903-), Shera (c1907-), and Ferne Anderson (1910-).

Samuel H. Anderson (1866-1922) lived in Muskogee, Ok. He married Jessie (c1874-), and five children were Vachel (1890-1972), Estain (1897-), Willie (c1901-), Clarence (c1908-), and Hattie Anderson (1910-). Vachel Anderson (1890-1972) lived in Globe, Az. He married Ollie Pyeatt (1894-1992), and four children were Vachel Willard (1916-2006) who lived in California; Ollie Geneva (1917-94) who lived in California and married a Cosgrove; Clarence Victor (1920-81) who lived in California; and George R. Anderson (1921-2016) who served in WWII.

Victor Hobbs Anderson (1874-1945) lived in El Paso County, Tx. He married Bennett B. (1884-1966), of Texas. Their children were Helen M. (c1910-); and Victor Hobbs Anderson, Jr. (1916-72) who served in the Army in WWII and was vice-president of Savage Oil Co. in El Paso, Tx. The latter married Louise E. Rowden (c1923-), of El Paso, and their son was Victor Hobbs Anderson III (1953-87).
