The 1930 census lists him as the son of Abraham and Mary Buice.

He married Clara Elizabeth Whitley. They had 12 children: Mary Ann, Carl Henry, Robert "Bobby" Harris, Fanny Lee "Faye", Jerry Mack, Linda Lou, James Hugh, Clara Margaret, Roy Dean, Janie Mae, Ronald "Ronnie" Lee, and Donald "Donny" Lee.

He worked for the WPA during the 1940s as a construction worker. He then moved to Wilcox County, Georgia, where he bought a cotton farm. According to a 1955 USDA permit, he had a license to grow up to 14 acres of cotton, indicating the approximate size of his farm.

He died of a heart attack in 1957, leaving his wife and 10 surviving children.
