Vera Hibbert, 87

Wasilla resident Vera Alberta Hibbert, 87, died Oct. 5, 2005, in Wasilla with family members at her side.

Graveside services were Oct. 6 at McGahan Cemetery in Nikiski, where she was laid to rest next to her husband, Jack.

Mrs. Hibbert was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Meeteetse, Wyo., to Hugh and Essie House. She graduated from Burlington High School in Wyoming and became married in 1940 in Montana. Most of her life was spent with her husband, Jack, ranching in Wyoming.

In 1984, they retired and moved to Alaska to be near their son. When Mrs. Hibbert was 28, she was diagnosed with cancer and went to a sanatorium in Missouri for treatment.

She was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1954.

Her family said: "Vera was the most caring person there was. She was always so concerned for others and was known for her pineapple upside down cakes when anyone was sick or for a funeral. Her nieces and nephews considered their Aunt Vera as their second mother. She was always helping someone or sharing her garden produce and flowers. Sunday dinner was a big get-together at her home. All the relatives and friends would always stop around dinnertime because they knew that Vera would have something special to eat.

"She dearly loved her grandchildren, which were the highlight of her life. The grandchildren would count the days until school was out so they could come to the ranch and spend the summer with their grandparents. Her grandchildren were proud of their grandmother's muscles and were always asking grandma to flex her arms to show off for their friends.

"Even more than her muscles, the strength of her spirit will linger with us. We love her and know that she loves us. She will be dearly missed."

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hibbert was preceded in death by four brothers, Tilford, Dutch, Jim and Dale; sister, Barbara Michaels; and granddaughter, Kendra Johnson.

Survivors are two sisters, Helen Michaels and Dorothy Emery; daughter and son-in-law, Marieta and Martin Johnson; son and daughter in-law, Guy and Corky Hibbert; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
