Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 24, and was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 158th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 31, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on January 15, 1864, he fought in the September 29, 1864 Battle of Chapins Farm, Virginia, and was awarded the CMOH for his bravery there. His citation reads simply "Gallantry in advancing to the ditch of the enemy's works". His Medal was awarded to him on April 6, 1865, and he was honorably mustered out on service on June 30, 1865.
