LAWRENCE - Clarence Utter, 29, of Dowagiac was killed early Saturday morning in an auto accident north of Dowagiac.
According to Cass sheriff deputies, Utter was riding with his brother, Richard Utter of Lawrence, and Rita Watkins of Niles, who was driving. Officers said the car missed a "T" intersection and slid into a large tree. Utter was pinned under the car until his brother and Miss Watkins jacked the car from him. He was dead on arrival at a Dowagiac hospital.
Funeral services for the father of four were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lawrence Congregational church with the Rev. Sol Stucky, Gobles, officiating and burial was in Hill cemetery.
Casket bearers were Irwin Barker, Dale Robbins, Allen McDaniel, Gerald Haney, Harold Ball and Walter Jaskola.
Utter was born in Lawrence, the son of Riley and Marvil Utter, who survive. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence and had been employed by Rudy Manufacturing Co. at Dowagiac.
Other survivors are his wife, the former Grave Herriman; his four children, Timothy, Todd, Tracy and Tina; four brothers, Leslie of Paw Paw, Don, stationed at Fort Hood, Tex.; Max, stationed at Fairbanks Alaska; and Richard of Lawrence; four sisters, Mrs. Leo Stillwell of Dowagiac, Mrs. Robert Hafer of East Lansing, Mrs. Walter Jaskola of Benton Harbor and Mrs. Laddie LeBlonde of Stevensville; and a grandfather, Clarence Ruple, Keeler.
