John L. Evans (Jack)

Age 95, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Alice Willard Evans (Sally), with whom he shared almost 70 years of marriage. Born in Liverpool, England, he was the son of the late James and Mary Johnston Evans. He grew up in Bryn Mawr, PA and graduated from Lower Merion High School. Jack enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and served during WW II as a crew chief in the 325th Fighter Group known as the Checkertails. He worked in the Engineering Department at the University of Delaware and for the DuPont Company as a laboratory metallurgist, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and sang in the choir until just a few years ago. He enjoyed golf and meeting every year with his war buddies at the Checkertail Reunions. Jack was known for his kindness and he dedicated his life to helping others. His unwavering sense of humor touched everyone he met.

His survivors, in addition to his wife Sally, include Mary and Mike Sullivan, Jim and Mary Evans, Susan and Russ Messick, and Kathy and Dwayne Cluff. He was also a beloved grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
