Deceased Name: Howard Lee Allen Sr. established bait-and-tackle business in Volusia
Howard Lee Allen Sr. of Port Orange was known as a true Southern gentleman, a man who valued hard work, honesty and family above all else. A veteran of World War II, he believed strongly in duty and responsibility and instilled those values in his four children.
Allen died Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 83.
Born in 1924 in Columbia, S.C., Allen came to Florida as a boy and graduated from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps right out of school and served in Japan, the Philippines and Hawaii, according to his youngest son, Bill Allen of Port Orange.
"He didn't even get to go to his graduation because they drafted him right out of school," he said, adding that his father often told stories of his experiences as a co-pilot aboard a B-25 bomber. "He was very proud of that time in his life. He told me many times that when they left on those flights they never knew if they were going to come back."
While still in the service, Allen attended college in Pennsylvania, where he met his wife, Phyllis Allen.
The couple later moved to South Carolina, where Howard Allen and his father operated a family-owned sawmill. That entrepreneurial experience stuck with Allen. After returning to Florida, he opened what came to be known as Howard's Bait & Tackle in Port Orange. From its humble beginnings in 1972 as a roadside stand that sold home-made souvenirs, the business has expanded to include bait, tackle, cold drinks and sandwiches. After 36 years, the third-generation family business has become a landmark run by Bill Allen and his son.
The business allowed Howard Allen to pursue his love of fishing, a pastime he enjoyed sharing with friends and family.
"I remember my first day fishing with him in the boat," said Bill Allen. "That was a special time for me and I'll never forget that."
Allen said his father was a simple man who was known for enjoying a good joke, but who also taught his children the importance of always doing their best.
"If he did something, it was done right and he taught us that . . . He was just a good, old-fashioned, honest, down-to-earth guy," he said. "He was a diamond, that's all there is to it."
Allen is also survived by his wife of 64 years Phyllis Allen; son Howard "Butch" L. Allen Jr. of Palm Coast; daughters, Karen Courtney of Palm Coast and Linda Westberry of DeLand; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
