Leonard Franklin Thomas, Sr., 82, a former long time resident of St. Ignace, died on Thursday, February 8, 1973 of an apparent heart attack while visiting a daughter in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was buried from the St. Ignatius Loyola Church in services conducted by Ry. Rev. Msgr. Bernard Karol on Tuesday, February 13, 1973.

Mr. Thomas was born April 27, 1890 in LaPeer, LaPeer County, Michigan. to Albert & Naomi (nee Martin) Thomas.

His wife, Leafy Ann (nee Lozon) preceded him in death on January 30, 1963. (They were married in 1910 on Mackinac Island) He was also preceded by an infant son, Earl (1929-1929) and a daughter, Hazel (1914-1917).

While in the St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie area, he worked for many years as a semi-truck driver for Stroh's beer going from the Soo to Detroit in later years, sometimes on a gravel road.In his younger days, he delivered mail from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island. I have a newspaper clipping telling about a horse-drawn wagon that went thru the ice and he lost everything, including all the mail.

Mr. Thomas is survived by three sons: Floyd of South Haven, Lawrence of Mt. Clemens, and Leonard Jr., (Cookie) of St. Ignace; three daughters, Mrs. Rowena Obeshaw of St. Ignace, Mrs. Eleanor Kroll of Kalamazoo with whom he had made his home for the past several years, and Mrs. Marion Billig of Idaho Falls, Idaho. There are 24 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.

Visitation from 2pm to 9:30pm on Monday and Rosary service at 8pm was held at the Davis Funeral Home in St. Ignace.

Pallbearers in attendance were: William Ferris, Joe Gill, Tommy Johnson, Bernard Paquin, Albert Gustafson and Leo Donovan.

Burial was in the St. Ignatius Cemetery in St. Ignace next to his wife, Leafy.

(a personal note)
Grandpa Thomas was a big man, well over 6' tall. He loved to fish and hunt, drink beer, and smoke cigars. Everyone who knew "Grandpa Len" loved him. He loved to laugh and play tricks especially to his granddaughter-in-law, Stella, who loved that big bear of a man. Both of her grandfathers died years before she was born so Grandpa Len was loved as much as if he really was her Grandpa.
