On Tuesday, January 23, Mrs. Matilda Tannehill Case, of Ursina, died after a comparatively short illness. She had been declining for several months, but no uneasiness was felt by the family or friends until the Friday before her death, when her illness took a sudden turn for the worse and her family and friends realized that the end was near. Mrs. Case was aged 72 years, 9 months and 1 day, being born in Lower Turkeyfoot township April 22, 1839. She was a daughter of the late Zachariah Tannehill, Sr., and Mary Ann (Lanning) Tannehill, her ancestors on both sides being members of the colonists from New Jersey that settled near the Jersey church before the American Revolution. Her maternal great-grandmother was a charter member of the Jersey Baptist church, the first of that denomination to be organized west of the Alleghenies. She was married to A.J. Case of Lower Turkeyfoot township on February 9, 1862, so had she lived to that date this year she would have been married 50 years. In 1863 herself and husband moved to Fayette county where they lived until about six years ago, when they moved back to the Case farm near Fort Hill, and resided there until 1909, when they purchased a home in Ursina, where they resided until her death. Mrs. Case was a sincere Christian lady, a devoted wife and mother, and was respected and loved for her sterling qualities. She was a member of the Presbyterian church at Connellsville but since coming to Ursina she worshiped in the Jersey Baptist church. Her bereaved husband, who is one of the well known citizens of Ursina and a justice of the peace and highly respected, has the sincere sympathy of the community in his bereavement. A pathetic incident connected with the estimable lady's death was that her brother, Zachariah Tannehill of Draketown, was stricken with paralysis about the same time, and is now in a very precarious condition. Besides her husband, Mrs. Case is survived by the following children: Ralston, of Peoria, Ill.; Miss Lizzie R. Case, at home; and George W., of Fort Hill. Besides these, she is survived by two brothers, Zachariah, referred to above, and Victor, of Hillsborough, Ohio, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Whipkey, of Scullton. On Friday afternoon, January 12, services were held at the residence in Ursina, at which Rev. L.P. Glass, Baptist minister of the Confluence congregation officiated and preached a very affecting sermon. On Saturday morning the remains were taken to Connellsville for interment. The interment took place in Hill Grove cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. J.L. Proedfit of the Presbyterian church of that place, of which congregation she was a member. The pallbearers were John A. Armstrong, Samuel Goodman, J.C. Lydic, George A. Campbell, J.W. Stouffer, and C.H. Kennell. [Unknown Source]
