Funeral services celebrating the life of Henry B. "Bud" Oberlies, 91, Utica, will be at 2 pm. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Scott Funeral Homes North Chapel, Jeffersonville, with burial in Utica Hillcrest Cemetery. He died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at University of Louisville Hospital.
He was a kind, giving and gracious person who was devoted to God and to his family. A lifetime resident of Utica, he was the oldest resident of Utica, and was the last surviving member of a group of Utica residents who started both the Utica Volunteer Fire Department and the Utica Hillcrest Cemetery Association, both organized in the early 1950s. He helped build the old Utica Fire Department, which is now the Utica Community Center and for several years served on the Utica Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors. He was a World War II Army veteran, retired from Colgate Palmolive Company, and was a member of the Utica United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Alyne Grider; a son, Larry Oberlies and his wife, Debra, Lexington; a daughter, Brenda Dorman, Utica; three grandchildren, Angie Henley and her husband, Eddie, Greenville, Matt Oberlies and his wife, Erin, Scottsburg, and Aaron Dorman, New Albany; three great-grandchildren, Connor and Talon Henley and Allison Oberlies; a brother-in-law, Walter Grider, Utica; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Maggie Oberlies, the couples first born, a son, Melvin Henry Oberlies, a brother, George Oberlies, three sisters, Mary McDonner, Fay Davis, and Margaret Cook, and mother and father-in-law, Walter and Fannie Grider. He is also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Wilson Cook, Jack Davis, and Lerron and James Grider and sisters-in-law, Nancy and Ann Grider.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and after 10 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
