Mary Oliveira Azevedo Freitas was born to Joseph Oliveira and Constancia Azevedo Oliveira on July 5, 1885 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first of seven children. Mary's father, Joseph Oliveira, was from Porte Del Gato, San Miguel, Azores Island, Portugal. Her mother, Constencia Azevedo Oliveira, was born at Puente Norte, Sao Jorge, Azores Islands. Both of Mary's parents' families moved to Hawaii to work in Pineapple plantations.

Being the eldest child, she was allowed to attend school through the third grade. She then had to stay home to help with the work while her brothers and sisters attended school.

Mary had chores to do since she was a toddler. At the age of four, she was already doing laundry, using wooden washboards. The washboards kept breaking, so her father got her a glass washboard.

At the age of five, her mother told her to go to the woodshed to gather firewood. Mary went there and found a little of newborn kittens whose mother belonged to a neighbor. So instead of gathering firewood, Mary gathered the kittens in her skirt and brought them to her mother. "See how cute they are," she cooed in Portuguese. Her mother got very angry and in scolding her, she said, "I told you to bring me firewood, and instead you brought me a bunch of cats!" She then switched Mary. From that point on, Mary did not like cats.

When Mary was a teenager, the family immigrated to Sausalito, Marin County, where she helped her parents with the chores, arising before dawn to her father's knock on the wall.

In October 1908, she married John Pereira Azevedo and moved to Tuttletown. Her first child was a stillborn daughter. Her second child was Joseph Azevedo, and her last child was Madeline Lera Azevedo (Machado).

During her marriage, she cooked for the railroad workers, and all her life she tended her beautiful flower garden and animals. She loved parakeets, always having a pair, always named Billy and Jeanette.

After she was widowed, she married Joseph Freitas in January 1954. He passed away January 1, 1958, and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Sonora.

Mary was active until her second heart attack in 1967. While hospitalized in Sonora, she refused to allow the nurses to help her walk to the bathroom. She fell and broke her hip. Her hip healed more quickly than expected, but she was not allowed to leave the hospital until arrangements could be made for around the clock care, something she refused to have. She refused to move from her home, and she refused to have a 24 hour caretaker.

Shortly before her death, she was transferred to a hospital in Madera to be near her daughter. She passed away in her sleep from sudden pneumonia on October 24, 1967.

Mary's siblings were Joseph, Caroline (nee Escobar), Rose (nee Borges), Manuel (passed away in infancy), Manuel (second child w/name), and George.
