Major Jay Aubin was born on August 8, 1966 and was a native of Skowhegan, Maine. Major Aubin enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 1984 and began Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina in Feb 1985.

After graduation from recruit training, he was trained as an Aircraft Mechanic on the A-6/EA-6 aircraft and served with Marine Attack Squadron (All Weather) (VMA(AW)) 242 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California until his transfer to the Marine Corps Reserve in 1989. Major Aubin was called back to active duty during Desert Storm and served until May 1991. While attending the University of Southern Maine, he was enrolled in the Platoon Leaders Class. He graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Industrial Technology.

In December 1993 Major Aubin was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Upon his commissioning he attended The Basic School from August 1994 to February 1995. Upon completion of the Basic School, he transferred to NAS Pensacola, where he underwent Naval flight training. On 13 December 1996, Major Aubin completed flight training and earned his wings as a Naval Aviator. He was subsequently transferred to Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 204 (HMT-204) at Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC for follow on training as a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter pilot.

Major Aubin's Fleet Marine Force time was spent with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 (HMM-265) in Okinawa, Japan from September 1997 to May 2002. During his time with HMM-265, Major Aubin attended the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One, graduating in April 2000 only to return in July 2002 to serve as a CH-46 Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

With the deployment of Marine forces to Kuwait for participation in Operation Enduring Freedom (later renamed Iraqi Freedom), Major Aubin was requested by Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) to provide planning and execution expertise and served with Marine Medium Lift Helicopter Squadron (HMM-268) during hostilities.
