U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Jackson County, Illinois, in 1864, he later attended the University of Missouri, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1886 and commenced to practice law in Carthage, Missouri. He was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives in 1901 and elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth Congress, serving (1907-09). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was general counsel for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, (1914-32). He died in retirement at age 85.
