US Congressman. Immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1852, he settled in Missouri, attended public schools, graduated from the University of Missouri and taught school in Illinois, for several years. Returning to Marshall, Missouri, in 1875, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, engaged in the practice of law, was elected probate judge in 1880 and was prosecuting attorney of Saline County, (1882-84). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth, Fifty-sixth, and Fifty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1903. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law
until his death at age 56.
