Munson Strong
THURSTON, Nov, 11.—Munson Strong died at his home in Thurston Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock of heart disease, aged 79 years, 11 months and 22 days. Mr. Strong was born in Candor, Tioga Co., N. Y.. Nov. 9, 1839, a son of Joel C. Strong. In 1864 he came to Thurston and settled on the farm where he has permanently remained.
In 1864 he married Mary Coston, a daughter of Christopher C and Nancy Coston of Thurston and to them five children were born, Charles of Wavery. Mrs. Burnett Woodard of West Laurens, Otsego Co.. N. Y., Fred Gay of Penn Yan, Christopher Ward of Corning and Inez deceased. He enlisted at North Reading Aug. 6, 1861 as a private under Capt. N. Coryell. Co. A, 89th Regiment, New York Volunteers, Infantry Reserve under command of Col, Harrison S. Fairchild. He served with General Burnslde's expeditionary corps In North Carolina, later in the third division of the 9th Corps and participated in the following battles: South Mils, North Carolina, April 16, 1862; Jefferson City. South Mountain, Newbern. Antlntnm. 17th of Sept. In the last battle he was wounded by a sabre thrust in the foot and also in the left leg below the knee; he was sent to Fredrick City Hospital, then he went home on a ninety days furlough after which he was sent to a convalescent camp where he was mustered out of service and honorably discharged in 1863 by reason of disability.
Mr. Strong was a kind husband, a loving father and much attached to his home. His remains lie at rest in the Thurston cemetery by the side of his daughter who died in 1899. He was well and favorably known and respected by the large attendance at the funeral. The floral offerings were beautiful and many. His funeral was conducted by Rev. John Miller of Campbell, a veteran of the Civil War. The bearers were comrades of the G. A. R. of Savona and Thurston. It was his wish that the few who remain should follow him to his last resting place which was done.
