Obituary for Dorothy Curtis
Dorothy Fern Curtis, 95, was born on the farm, Sept 16, 1920 in Independence Township, Appanoose County, Iowa to Benjamin Franklin and Isal Anna (Espy) Irwin. She died Monday, July 25th, 2016 at a private care facility in Centerville, Iowa. Dorothy married Lewis William Curtis, in Centerville, May 2, 1940. To this union two sons were born.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Mildred Lois (Irwin) Tarbell, a half sister Helen Cozad, a half brother Oswald, brother in law Mansel Tarbell, her nephew Dorman Irwin, that she was close to in age and lived in the same assisted living facility for a time, and various other family members.

She is survived by her sons, David Neal Curtis and partner Jane Harvey of Lakewood, Colorado and Allan Ray (Vonette) Curtis of Hanson, Kentucky. One granddaughter, Renee (Paul) Rimmert, Centerville, two great grand children, Michael (Nesha) Bloomer, Broomfield, Colorado, Lauren Bloomer and partner Anthony Butler, Westminster, Colorado and four great-great grandchildren, Jayace Butler, Jayden Butler, Jaysen Butler and Lilly Bloomer.

Dorothy graduated from Centerville High School in 1938 and taught at North Chariton (Tater Hill) school, the same rural school as her mother (Isal Anna (Espy) Irwin Sulser), did a generation before. In 1940, Lewis and Dorothy bought a home with 160 acres that they farmed, south of Griffinsville. Dorothy lived on the same farm for 72 years until moving to Centerville. She enjoyed spending time with her family, living on the farm, her flowers, her garden, bird watching and her pets. Dorothy never met a dog or cat that she didn’t fall in love with. She loved doing crafts, everything from making hollyhock flower dolls, creating oil paintings, and doing needlework to arranging flowers and crocheting. Dorothy was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother and will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 29, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made, in Dorothy’s name, to the Heartland Humane Society and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
