Obituary, The Baum Bugle, Volume 55, Number 1, Spring 2011:
It is with sadness that the Baum family reports the passing of L. Frank Baum's last living granddaughter, Florence Ducker Baum, on October 21, 2010 [SSDI = 9 Oct 2010]. Florence was the third child of Edna and Rob Baum. Bonnie, as she liked to be called, will be remembered for her love of life and infectious smile, the latter most likely developed by having to contend with her two brothers, Stanton and Robert.
At age fifteen, Florence met Judy Garland during the filming of The Wizard of Oz, and they quickly became friends. Since Judy was on a strict diet, Florence would go to the commissary, get a lunch that included a double helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, and then sneak it into Judy's dressing room for the young actress to eat. Her most cherished memory of Judy was when she heard Judy sing "Over the Rainbow". Bonnie delighted in attending Oz events and conventions and in sharing her family experiences of Oz with others. In 1966 she hosted the Winkie Convention at her house in La Cañada, California, and contributed an article, "Oz in Hollywood", for the Autumn 1999 Baum Bugle.
Bonnie married George Edward Hurst in 1946, and together they raised five children: Susan, Pattie, Kimberly, Gigi, and Scott. Her family held a Service of Remembrance to celebrate her life at the L. Frank Baum family plot in Forest Lawn, Glendale, California, where she was interred.
