Daniel A. Pettengill, 82, of Harwich Port and Yarmouthport, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Linda (Huntington) Pettengill for 52 years.
Mr. Pettengill was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to parents, Irving Wilbur and Gertrude (Kroger) Pettengill. Beginning in 1931, the family spent summers in Harwich Port. He
graduated from the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy's V-12 officer candidate school, where he continued his education at Princeton University and Notre Dame. As a naval officer, Mr. Pettengill served in the Pacific in 1945 and 1946.
After the war, he enrolled at Williams College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in history in 1948. Upon graduation he joined the investment firm of Baker Weeks in New York City. In 1950, Mr. Pettengill was recalled to active service in the Navy for the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1953 at the rank of lieutenant, junior grade,after an injury in Guam.
Mr. Pettengill earned a master's degree in hospital administration at Washington University in St. Louis. He served at hospitals in Salem, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. Pettengill built a home in Harwich Port in 1984, when they retired. They just recently moved to Yarmouthport.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Pettengill is survived by three children, Daniel A. Pettengill III of Sudbury, Nancy P. Bushnell of Trumbull, Conn., and Sarah P. Hart of Carlisle; two brothers, Irving W. Pettengill of Naples, Fla., and Kroger Pettengill of Cincinnati; two
sisters, Mary-Emily Pettengill Smith-Petersen of Naples, and his twin sister, Patricia Pettengill Whitaker of Chatham; seven dear grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews.
