William's remains were recovered & identified in November, 1980 and he is now interred here in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He also has a "Cenotaph" at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines.

William served as a Captain & Pilot on P-38H #42-66562, 431st Fighter Squadron, 475th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Brown County, Wisconsin prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Private on September 25, 1940, prior to the war, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his P-38 took off from Nadzab Airfield No. 1 with three P-47s. It is believed that bad weather caused him to crash during the war.

His status was changed to "Killed In Action" after his remains were recovered.

William was awarded the Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters.
