Thomas Roderick Townsend was the second child of Thomas Townsend and Mary Elizabeth Stapleton Townsend. On April 17, 1819, in McIntosh County, GA, he married Pamelia Ann "Nancy" Dean (1805-1886), the daughter of Jesse and Mary Ann Dean.

About 1826, he and his brother, Spencer Burton Townsend, came to Texas to investigate the land being offered to settlers by the Mexican government. Satisfied with what they learned, they returned home and sold their holds and with their brothers, Stephen and Moses Townsend, moved their families to Texas sometime in December 1831.

Thomas appeared with his brother, Spencer, before the Board of Land Commissioners on Mar. 2, 1836, where he signed a statement he had arrived in Texas prior to that date and received a league of land in David G. Burnet's colony and settled near what is now Crockett, Texas on the old Nacogdoches Road. He signed the list of petitioners asking the Texas Congress to establish Houston County in 1837 and listed Mustang Prairie as his home.

During the Texas Revolution, Thomas Roderick Townsend furnished beef and corn from his farm for the beleaguered Texas freedom fighters. And he also served in the Texas Ranger company of Capt. Elisha Clapp. Captain Clapp was also from Mustang Prairie and he and his men had been ordered by General Sam Houston on May 31, 1837, to patrol from any point on the Brazos River to a Mr. Hall's trading house on the Trinity River in order to intercept raiding Indians.

Thomas Roderick Townsend was serving jury duty in La Grange when he died on August 31, 1838, at age 41. In 1839, the settlement of his estate in Fayette County indicated the sum of $33.47 was due the State of Texas. The family Bible of Thomas' son, Light Stapleton Townsend, states that Thomas is buried in LaGrange City Cemetery. The grave is marked with a tall limestone marker.
