U.S. Congressman. He attended Caledonia County Academy, moved to Minnesota, in 1855, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1860 and began a law practice in Minneapolis. He was a member of the board of education, (1860-68), Minneapolis city prosecuting attorney, (1861-64) and prosecuting attorney of Hennepin County, (1863-67, 69-73). In addition, he was alderman of the City of Minneapolis, (1865-69), a member of the Minnesota State Senate, (1875-85) and regent of the University of Minnesota, (1880-88). In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was president of the First National Bank, (1903-07).
