U.S. Congressman. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Private in Company D, 14th Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army. After the war, he graduated from the University of Minnesota, studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1903 and commenced practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1911, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-second Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1925. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was president of the Millers’ National Federation, (1925-29), member of the board of directors for General Mills Incorporated and president of the Transportation Association of America, from 1943, until his death at age 67.
