A Celebration of the life of Bruce C. Merryman, Sr. will be held in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors, 1504 N. Thompson St., Conroe, TX on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held Friday evening, January 21st, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. He will be interred at U.S. Houston National Cemetery.
Mr. Merryman, born in Corpus Christi, TX on May 23, 1922, was the second of four sons born to Benjamin Oscar and Gertrude Gray Merryman. He passed peacefully from this life on Friday, January 14, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Kinsey Merryman; a daughter, Margaret May Merryman; and all three of his brothers (Sam, Jim and Bill).
Mr. Merryman spent most of his career in the oil industry. Although most of his work was done behind a desk, he especially enjoyed time spent in the oilfields, traipsing around the United States and New Zealand.
Bruce was a decorated WWII Army Air Corps Glider Pilot. He saw action during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 and Operation Varsity on March 24, 1945 - the largest airborne operation in history to be conducted on a single day and in one location. Stories of Mr. Merryman's wartime experiences have been chronicled in numerous books, magazines, and at least one Masters Thesis. The most notable of the books, Citizen Soldiers, written by the late Stephen E. Ambrose, became a New York Times bestseller.
During retirement, Bruce's favorite annual activity was attending the reunion of the 62nd Airlift Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, where he rekindled friendships with WWII buddies and formed new friendships with younger servicemen and women. He was honored to have highlights of his experiences showcased in the Heritage Room of the 62nd Squadron at Little Rock AFB and at the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, TX.
Mr. Merryman is survived by two sons and one daughter: Bruce Merryman and his wife, Lisa, of Bryan, TX; Dan Merryman and his wife, Charlene, of Fort Worth, TX; and Karla Merryman and husband, Marty Chenault, of Houston. Seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives also survive.
Mr. Merryman's children would like to express thanks to Pat Teich of TeiGoRoc Assisted Living and Odyssey Hospice, both of Conroe, for the extraordinary loving care their father received during his final days; and to special friends Tom and Janet Batchelor of Willis and Janice and John Cromien of Panorama. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Bruce C. Merryman, Sr. to Silent Wings Museum, 6202 North Interstate 27, Lubbock, TX 79403
