John Edward (Jack) Bitner
January 26, l922 - February 12, 2008

John Edward Bitner, 86, born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania and forty-four year resident of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Tuesday, February 12 at 6:20 pm in the presence of his beloved family. John was a proud World War II veteran. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on October 12, 1942 and became a "radio-gunner" on a B-7 Flying Fortress, completing thirty missions out of England in the European Theater of conflict. He met his wife of 62 years, Jean Mortenson Bitner, while volunteering for war supply work. From the moment he saw her, John knew she was the one for him. He was devoted to his family and friends and never met a stranger. John served tours of duty in Guam; Tracy, California, Mountain Home, Idaho; Madrid, Spain; Homestead, Florida; Edinburgh, Scotland; San Antonio, Texas and Taiwan, retiring in San Antonio in 1969. He will be remembered by all for his indomitable spirit, can-do attitude, and unfailing sense of humor. John loved life and embraced it fully. His hobbies included chess, checkers, Bridge, juggling (including lit torches!), calling bingo, working at the family marina, and being the family historian. John also invented a board game, "Number Cross", which was trademarked in the mid-80's.

In October of 2001, John and Jean moved to Newforest Estates, John quickly made friends with residents and staff alike. He was elected President of the Residents' Association in 2002 and served two terms of office; he has been Treasurer until the present. John loved to serve others and found a calling when the Country Store for the Newforest residents closed. He reopened the store, with the help of three other dedicated residents, and faithfully replenished stock and kept store hours three days a week. In addition, John caleed bingo two days a week, played Bridge, and created yummy chocolate candies which he sold in the Country Store.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; his brother, Jim Bitner; children: Susan Mishal, John Bitner, Janet Caylor, William Bitner, and Melodie Archer; grandchildren: Steve Allen, Jared Bitner, Brent Bitner, Ryan Bitner, and Mackenzie Archer; and great-grandchildren: Taylor Allen, Steven Allen, Brittany Bitner, Austin Bitner and Tyler Bitner.

John leaves a legacy of love and giving.
