U.S. Congressman, Louisiana Governor. He graduated from the College of William & Mary Kentucky, in 1797, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lexington, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1800, elected as a Republican to the Tenth and Eleventh Congresses, serving (1807-10). After leaving Congressman, he was appointed Governor of the Territory of Louisiana, serving (1810-12). During the War of 1812, he was appointed a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army in command of the 8th Military Department territory west of the Mississippi River. While on a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, he suddenly fell ill and died. Howard County Missouri, named in his honor.
