From the Daily Commercial Register; Sandusky, Ohio, October 5, 1852:

The Buffalo Advertiser announces the death of MAJOR ROLAND and says:

This gallant and distinguished officer, well known to many of our citizens from his services in this city in the second Artillery under Col. Bankhead, died of yellow fever, on Tuesday morning last, at Castle Pinckney, Charleston Harbor. Roland's gallantry, alertness and activity turned the tide of battle at Palo Alto, and his conduct at Resaca and Monterey, was such as to call forth the special commendation of Gen. Taylor. His regiment was withdrawn from the Rio Grande after the capture of Monterey, and was in most of the engagements on the march from Vera Cruz to the city of Mexico. He leaves no more courageous or promising officer in the army.
