U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Graduating from Tabor College Iowa, in 1890 he was the principal of the public schools in Leigh, Nebraska, (1890-92). Graduating from the law department of the University of Nebraska, in 1893, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a trustee of Tabor College, (1895-19050 and a member of the Nebraska State House of Representatives, (1896-98). In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1905. He was then elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1905-11). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 67.
