Nebraska Governor, U.S. Senator. He attended the Kearney Military Academy and graduated from the University of Nebraska, in 1914. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry, (1916-17) and as a Captain of artillery during World War I. After the war, he was editor-publisher of the Gordon Journal (1922-40), a member of the Nebraska State House of Representatives in 1921 and a member of the Nebraska State Senate, (1925-29). In 1940, he was elected as a Republican the 26th Governor of Nebraska, serving until 1947. After leaving office he served as served as director of the Division of Internal Affairs and Communications, Military Government of Germany, in 1947, was chief of the American Mission Aid to Greece, (1947-48) and served on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. In 1952, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served until death from a heart attack at age 60.
