Military Figure. He lost his life fighting in the Paraguay War. Born Domingo Fidel Castro, he was adopted in 1848 as the son of Domingo F. Sarmiento, the President of Argentina, who served from 1868 to 1874. Many reason that he was the biological son of President Sarmiento with a married woman. Eventually, his parents did marry. He was schooled in Argentina, finishing university studies before starting to study law. He abandoned law for the military against his mother's wishes. On September 22, 1866, he was mortally wounded in the Battle of Curupayty. His father was in the United States at the time of his death. As an homage, his father wrote in 1886 "La Vida de Dominguito," his last book before his death. Streets, town squares, and schools are named in his honor. His life is documented in the 1944 Argentine film "His best student."
