Mabelle was born and raised in Boise. Between high school graduation and marriage, she worked in the State Land Office, where her father was Commissioner. She married Judson Allen on Dec. 31, 1906, after which they home-steaded near Parma at Roswell. They stayed on the land for about 7 years before Judson's health forced them to sell. They both of them enrolled at the College of Idaho in Caldwell in the fall of 1915. Judson died in early 1916, but Mabelle was able to continue and graduate Cum Laude in June of 1920. She began teaching in Boise in 1921.

In June of 1922 Laura married Dr. Irvine Rhinehart Lyman. They divorced. In 1926 Mabelle was elected Idaho State Superintendent of Public Instruction and served a two-year term (1927-1928). The Idaho Blue Book lists her as Mabelle McConnell Lyman. On Thanksgiving of 1933 Mabelle married Rev. Dr. William Basil Young. Mabelle earned a Master's degree from the University of Idaho, and continued to teach. After Dr. Young passed away she moved to Rancho Mirage, California to be near her son Carroll.
