During the depression years, Percy joined the CCC, the Civilian Conservation Corps, a "New Deal" program. He subsequently served in the US Coast Guard during WWII.
While stationed in NY, Percy became an avid boxer, representing the US Coast Guard team at Madison Square Garden boxing matches. He was trained by and sparred with Lt. Jack Dempsey,a former heavy-weight boxing champ who served as the Athletic Director for the Coast Guard. Percy was quick on his feet, and hard to beat!
Percy married Dolores E. Bruening; they had two sons. Percy was a handsome, charming and fiesty 'Frenchman', who never met a stranger. He and Dolores enjoyed league bowling, little league ballgames with their boys, ballroom dancing and weekends on the Bourbeuse River with their family. He taught the boys to fish and hunt.
He and his wife enjoyed living in Florida during their retirement, visiting the local VFW for pot-luck, a beer and a friendly game of Euchre. Age and failing health descended on both and they returned to live near family in MO. Percy dearly loved and missed his wife of many years; there wasn't a day that passed that he didn't reminisce about their life together.
He was a good man who knew the value of an honest days work. He was a friend to many, generous in spirit and sharing with those less fortunate. He enjoyed his life!
