Joseph W. Mefford was born in Brown County, Ohio, January 11, 1848; married Miss Elizabeth Warson September 26, 1867, and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1871. He came with his family to Larimer Conty December 12, 1882, and settled on a ranch in the Boxelder Valley, where he lived until March, 1904, when he moved to Fort Collins, which was his home until he died November 20, 1908.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mefford, three of whom died in in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Maude Carlton, Mrs. Eva Stroud and Mrs. Willson Mefford, who, with their bereaved mother and eight grandchildren mourn and irreparable loss.

In January, 1906, through an accident, Mr. Mefford suffered the loss of an eye, and in 1907 was afflicted with an incurable cancer. In April, 1908, he went to New York to receive treatment, returning to his home in this city last August. He suffered intensely from the malady during the last few months of his life and death came to him as a relief. The funeral took place on Sunday, November 22d, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Stroud, 226 Remington Street.
