Lucy was born March 4, 1838, at Carrol, Chatauqua Co., New York, daughter of John and Serina (Rice) Covell. She died June 3, 1921, at her home at 1103 W. Marin, Puyallup, Pierce Co., Wash., aged 83 years, 2 months and 29 days, and was buried in the Sumner Cemetery, Sumner, Pierce County, Wash.

On July 4, 1866, Lucy was united in marriage to Alonzo J. Barton at South Valley, Otsego Co., New York. Alonzo was born Feb. 23, 1836, in New York, son of Joseph and Sarah Barton, both also born in that state. He died Oct. 14, 1888, of asthma at Barron, aged 52 years, 7 months and 21 days, and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery. His gravestone is inscribed "At Rest Alonzo J. Barton Born Feb. 23, 1836 Died Oct. 14, 1888."

Their six children of whom the first four were born in Minnesota and last two in Wisconsin, were:

Lucy had four known brothers, all of whom served in the Union forces during the Civil War. They were Charles Covell, who served in Company F of the 9th New York Cavalry; Seth Covell, who served in Company H, 154th New York Volunteer Infantry; Harrison Covell, who also served in the 154th New York Infantry; and Edmond Covell, who served in Company A, 188th New York Volunteer Infantry.

Her one known sister, Louisa Covell, married Daniel Forbush. Their daughter, Serena Forbush, married John C. Rowland. Louisa, Daniel, Serena & John are all buried in Wayside Cemetery in Barron, Wisconsin. John was also a Civil War Veteran, having served in Company A, 112th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment.


Former Barronite Dies

A clipping from the Tacoma Daily Ledger of June 5, tells of the death of Mrs. Lucy J. Barton, a former resident of Barron county for many years. Death occurred on Friday, June 3, at her home in Aberdeen, Wash., and interment was made in the Puyallup, Wash., cemetery, on Sunday afternoon.
