Missouri, (1870-71) and deputy clerk of the circuit, county and probate courts of St. Francois County, Missouri. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1872, practiced law in Commerce, Missouri, was prosecuting attorney of Scott County, (1873-76) and a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1877-79). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 67.
