U.S. Congressman. Moving to Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, he engaged in the manufacture of locks, was Shelburne Falls justice of the peace in 1856 and organized the Yale and Greenleaf Lock Company. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel in command of the 52nd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers, Union Army. After the war, he settled in New York, in 1867 and resumed the manufacture of locks. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885 and elected to the Fifty-second Congress, serving (1891-93). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business activities until his death at age 79.
