U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to New York in 1815, he went on to become successful in the mercantile business. He was clerk of the New York State Assembly, (1831-32), clerk of Monroe County, (1834-37) and was on the board of aldermen in 1838. He served as Clerk of the New York State Senate, (1840-41), Postmaster of Rochester, (1842-45) and was Mayor of Rochester, (1846, 50). In1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Adter his term, he resumed his previous business interest until his death at age 66.
