U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York City with his parents in 1888, he graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1902, from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University,in 1906 and commenced the practice of medicine in New York City in 1906. He also engaged as a lecturer, editor, and playwright, with several of his plays being produced on Broadway. Entering politics, he was a member of the New York fifth district school board (1906-26), a member of the commission to inquire into the subject of widows’ pensions and of the State pension commission in 1913, a member of the State charities convention in 1914 and served as superintendent of Peoples Hospital, New York City (1910-27). In 1927, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventieth and to the six succeeding Congresses and served until his death.
