Nevada Territorial Governor, US Senator. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Governor of the newly-created territory of Nevada in 1861. He served in that office until 1864, when Nevada was admitted to the Union as the 36th state. He was then elected as a Republican Senator from Nevada to the United States Senate, joining William Morris Stewart as the State's first two Senators. He served from 1865 until 1873.
