Michael Higgins inherited the sawmills at Mount Airy that his father built and operated for many years. He was also financially involved with the shad fisheries along the Delaware River on Holcombe Island.
He accidentally drowned in a brook by his mill at the foot of Mount Airy between Lambertville and Flemington.
Michael Higgins served as a "minute man" in the Hunterdon County Militia during the American Revolution and served in the campaign of 1779 against the Six Nations.
