At the time of his enlistment he was described as 5'-8", hazel eyes, dark hair with a sallow complexion. His civilian occupation was musician. On April 14, 1876, Bruns was assigned to the 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. On May 15, 1876, Bruns was pending a discharge from the army, due to his lack of speaking or understanding English. Between May of 1876 and August 1876, pending the disposition of his discharge, Bruns was assigned to garden duties at Ft Lincoln. In August of 1876, due to the heavy losses from the Battle of the Little Big Horn, his discharge proceedings were halted. Bruns was assigned to the regimental band. On November 19, 1880, at Ft Meade, Dakota Territory, he was discharged at the expiration of his enlistment.
