U.S. Congressman, Rhode Island Governor. Graduating from Dartmouth College, in 1811, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1814 and practiced law in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1826-31) and was elected as a 12th Governor of the State of Rhode Island, serving (1831-33). After his term, he was a member of the Rhode Island Executive Council, (1842-43). In 1845, he was elected as a Whig Liberation to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. Retiring from politics, he practiced law until his death at age 60.
