US Senator. He immigrated to New York City, New York, with his parents in 1822. He graduated from Georgetown College, Washington, D.C., studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced to practice law in New York City. Entering into journalism, he was editor of the "Freeman’s Journal" and a contributor to newspapers in New York City. He moved to San Francisco, California, in 1850, published the "Public Balance", the "True Balance", and the "Standard". He was elected California State printer in 1851, then retired from journalism and resumed the practice of law. In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until he resigned in 1873. He again engaged in the practice of law in San Francisco, California, until his death at age 62.
