US Congressman. A Massachusetts native, Davis graduated from Harvard in 1849. In 1852 he moved to California and settled in San Francisco where in 1860, he took control of the Golden Gate Flouring Mills. In 1866 he became President of the Produce Exchange of San Francisco, a post he held until 1876. In 1877 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California's 1st District until 1881. In 1888 he was appointed the sixth President of the University of California in Berkeley until his resignation in 1890. He also served as president of the board of trustees of Stanford University from 1885 until his death in 1916. He is the son of Massachusetts Governor John Davis.
