MYERS, NY - Abraham K. Nicholas Jr., age 88, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2003. "Arak" was born on June 30, 1915, in Myers, NY, the son of the late Abraham and Susan (Solomon) Nicholas.He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in both the European and Asian theatres. He was employed as a chef at Joe's Restaurant from its opening day in 1932 until his retirement in 1980. "Arak" was a lifetime member of many local organizations, including the Eagles, Moose, and Elks Clubs and the VFW.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elma (Petaja) Nicholas; sons, James (Bertha), Groton, NY, and Robert (Nan), Elmira, NY; brothers, Michael, Massena, NY, and Joseph, George (Rita), and Richard (Edith), all of Ithaca, NY; grandsons, James (Anita), Matthew, Neal Short, and Keith Short; granddaughters, Patricia (Peter) Sidari, Terry (David) Maratas, Christine Joseph, Michelle, Deborah, Jennifer, Melissa Combs; and nine great grandchildren.He was predeceased by his sisters, Josephine Fenner and Leona (Murray) Kaplan.Family and friends are invited to call at the Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green St., Ithaca, on Friday, July 18, 2003 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a memorial reception to follow at the Lehigh Valley House. Committal services with full military honors will be held on Monday, July 21, 2003, at Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY. The family will provide flowers and requests that memorials be directed to St. George's Church, Myers, NY.He will be missed by all who knew him.
