U.S. Congressman, Massachusetts Governor. He graduated from Yale University, in 1933, studied law, was admitted to the bar and opened a law practice in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1937. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and Eighty-second Congresses, serving (1949-52). After his term, he was Massachusetts State Treasurer, (1952-54) and was elected the 60th Governor of Massachusetts, serving (1957-61). After leaving office, he practiced law, taught legal ethics at Portia Law School, (1969-74) and was administrative law judge with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, (1975-89). He died of heart failure at age 83.
