US Senator. A native of New York, he was an 1818 graduate of Union College in Schenectady. After he read law and was admitted to the bar, he started a law practice in Detroit, Michigan. He served a term as Detroit City Recorder and as Detroit mayor before being elected as a Whig to represent Michigan in the United States Senate in 1839. He served a single term from 1839 to 1845, and did not receive a nomination for re-election to the seat. He moved to Niagara Falls, New York after his term of office ended, and he passed away there in 1872. His uncle was Peter Buell Porter, who served as a General in the United States Army during the War of 1812, and as Secretary of War during the administration of President John Quincy Adams.
