He served in the Illinois National Guard. Following his unit's activation, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Servus Rubber Co. for 18 years and later as a welder for J.I. Case for many years until his retirement. Merle loved motorcycling, particularly Indian and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
