U.S. Congressman. Moving to Ohio, with his parents in 1839, he was a clerk on a steamer on Lake Superior, (1848-49), engaged in mercantile pursuits (1850-56) and was auditor of Sandusky County, (1856-60). During the Civil War, he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he was collector of internal revenue for the ninth district of Ohio, (1866-67), engaged in mercantile pursuits, (1866-73) and was successful in banking enterprises, (1873-89). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses, serving until 1893. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed in banking until his death.
