Literary Figure. A riverboat pilot, he was the co-pilot on the steamboats Pennsylvania and Alfred T. Lacey on which Samuel Clemens was a cub pilot. He greatly influenced the cub's education by reading classics aloud to him and Clemens recalled arguing the authorship of the Shakespeare plays with him. A story that Clemens wrote about George Ealer can be found in Chapter XI of "Life On the Mississippi." The photo here is of his gravesite location. His grave is unmarked.
